To Improve BI Outcomes, Make EPM a Strategic Part of a Data Leaders’ Project Portfolio

People often view enterprise performance management (EPM) primarily as a finance system. This common perception stems from the finance function using EPM the most and EPM capabilities supporting key finance needs, such as setting annual financial budgets and producing consolidated financial statements and reports. Based on that perception, some data leaders let the finance function drive deployment of EPM. Others may completely ignore EPM and focus on other analytic capabilities.

As its name suggests, EPM aims with its enterprise-wide scope to serve the needs of more than the finance function. Although meeting all of an organization’s performance management needs with one solution is unlikely, EPM can align the financial view of business performance with operational and functional metrics to help understand the relationship between business activities and financial outcomes.
